ABOUT
SCOTT RUSZKOWSKI
As a lifelong resident of South Bend, Indiana, Scott’s life has always been about service. His beginnings were humble — a teenager on South Bend’s west side, covering his South Bend Tribune paper route and working at Martin’s Super Market while attending LaSalle High School.
After graduating high school, Scott enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he was introduced to his lifelong passion: improving his community though policing.
Following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather, Scott joined the South Bend Police Department in 1988, quickly climbing the ranks in patrol, K9 and Street Crimes. He was honored to be named the 62nd Police Chief in 2015.
Throughout his law enforcement career, Scott completed hundreds of schools, classes and certifications but the most notable, however, was being named an honors graduate of the FBI National Academy in 2006. Less than 1% of police officers across the world are invited to attend this academy.
Scott has a patient wife, four sons and two grandchildren. Three of his boys attended South Bend Schools. One of his sons is a South Bend Police Officer and two are currently in college.
In addition to serving the City of South Bend as Police Chief for ten years, Scott serves on the boards of the following organizations: DTSB, Behavioral Health/Crisis, FOP Lodge #36, Kroc Center, IACP and American Legion Post #357.
Above all, Scott’s priority is people.
“We're here because of the people and for them, our community is our family,” Scott says.
He has always relayed to his officers, and stands firm in, “the most important call you’ll ever be on is the one you’re on."
